Sectoral Business Groups


In line with Sharjah Chamber’s objectives to foster the private business sectors and develop their activities, it was necessary to seek the assistance of specialists and experts in Sharjah and the UAE for consultation .

Sharjah Chamber is keen to serve the private sector within the framework of the main objectives of the development plans of the emirate and the UAE, and therefore it has been decided to form representative groups, under the name of Sectoral Business Groups, that facilitate communication between the private sector and the Chamber, provide advice and feedback, propose initiatives, and organize events and programs that contribute to investment and economic growth.

Vision:

Business Groups shall facilitate communication between the business sector, Sharjah Chamber, and public entities, with the aim of addressing challenges and seeking opportunities that meet the needs and aspirations of the economic sectors.

Mission:

Monitoring and analyzing the economic sectors, identifying challenges, proposing effective solutions, and developing opportunities with the relevant authorities; developing communication and working mechanisms with the sectors and launching initiatives.

Objectives:

• Communicating with the private sector and identifying challenges and opportunities.

• Improving economic performance by launching effective and specific programs for each business group.

• Launching initiatives that support the private sector and its role in the economic community.

• Encouraging investment and introducing the Chamber’s members to available opportunities.

The Business Groups’ competencies:

• Considering issues raised by any party concerned, providing feedback, and developing proposals.

• Defining objectives and setting plans for the sector's development.

• Communicating with partners as well as local and international NGOs and governmental institutions through the Chamber's channels.

• Reviewing laws or draft laws and providing recommendations on proposed amendments to these laws and regulations and proposing draft laws in cooperation with the relevant departments within the Chamber.

• Collaborating between the business groups and the Chamber's relevant departments and sections in providing and exchanging data, statistics, and publications related to the sector, and enabling these departments to conduct studies for the sector's development.

• Considering proposals submitted by at least two members of a group and approved for inclusion in the agenda by a majority of the group's members, including the committee chairman or deputy chairman.

• Organizing events and launching activities that serve sectors represented by the business groups.

Formation of Business Groups:

Business groups are formed by recommendation of the Board of Directors, a Permanent Committee, one of the Chamber’s Executive Departments, or at the request of a group of members affiliated with the Chamber in one of the economic sectors.

The importance of business councils; the Sharjah Chamber has been instrumental in establishing and supporting these councils, which are vital for enhancing economic cooperation between Sharjah and both local and international markets.

What are business councils?

The business councils (BC) are formulated by individuals who own businesses in Sharjah or investors who hold the same nationality and represent the business sectors in the United Arab Emirates.

Business councils are a voluntary association with legal personality, financial and administrative independence, not aiming to achieve profit or personal benefit, nor is it a governmental or political association, and it works based on collective action to serve and promote economic and trade cooperation between the two sides.

 Trade & Investment Promotion: Driving commercial and investment growth between the Emirate of Sharjah and represented countries by identifying and developing shared economic opportunities.

How to Establish a Business Council in Sharjah

Overview & Eligibility

A founding committee comprising investors of the same nationality may submit an official application to the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry to establish a Business Council.

The council must include at least twenty (20) founding members who are business owners representing diverse companies and institutions operating within the United Arab Emirates.

Required Documents & Requirements:

1. Letter of Intent: An official letter of interest expressing the desire to establish the Business Council.

2. Proposed Name: The official proposed title for the Business Council.

3. Investor Documentation (for each founding member):

-          Valid Trade License copy

-          Valid SCCI Membership Certificate copy

-          Passport copy

-          Valid Emirates ID copy

4. No-Objection Certificate (NOC): An official NOC issued by the respective embassy or general consulate in the UAE.

5. Detailed Action Plan: A comprehensive business and operational plan outlining the council's vision, objectives, and scheduled activities.

The Sharjah Excellence Award program consists of 8 awards:

  1. Sharjah Gulf Localization Award – For Large (250 employees and above), Small (9 – 49 employees) and Medium (50 – 249 employees) companies in the GCC countries’ private sectors that most employ UAE and GCC nationals. Participants in this category are evaluated based on Recruitment, Training, Qualifications and Job Sustainability.

  2. Sharjah Gulf Excellence Award – For Large (250 employees and above), Small (9 – 49 employees) and Medium (50 – 249 employees) companies in the GCC countries’ private sectors. The winners of this award are nominated by the award Board of Trustees’ chairman and members.

  3. Sharjah Excellence Award – For Large (250 employees and above), Small (9 – 49 employees) and Medium (50 – 249 employees) companies from the private sectors in the Emirate of Sharjah only. Participants in this category are assessed based on the organizational excellence model.

  4. Sharjah Small & Medium Enterprises Award – Targets newly emerged companies in the United Arab Emirates. SMEs are divided into three categories: Infinitely Small (1 – 8 employees), Small (9 – 49 employees) and Medium (50 – 249 employees) businesses. This category is evaluated based on Strategic Planning, Marketing, Innovation, Risk Management and Business Results. Two winners will receive a cash prize of 25,000 AED each.

  5. Sharjah Entrepreneurs Award – Targets the most successful and leading entrepreneurs in the United Arab Emirates whom had put a footprint in the business world that has a significant impact on their personal and professional aspects. Nominations in this category are evaluated based on Personal Characteristics, Strategic Direction, Professionalism, Innovation and Business Results.

  6. Sharjah Social Responsibility Award – Recognizes organizations from Public & Private” Sectors in Sharjah which pay attention to the importance of improving their Corporate Social Responsibility performance and sustainability. This category is evaluated based on Community Awareness Campaigns, Participations in Local Charities, Voluntary and Environment and Educational Activities, Creating Initiatives that Promote a Healthy Workplace and Provide Job Opportunities and Training for the Youth.

  7. Sharjah Best Security Standards Award – Launched in partnership with Sharjah Police General Directorate, aimed at implementing security safety standards at large and small and medium enterprises. It is open for all companies operating in all private sectors in the emirate of Sharjah, and evaluation is based on three main criteria: Safety and Security, Economic Sustainability, and Social responsibility.

  8. Sharjah Entrepreneurs with Disability Award – This category is launched in line with the wise vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qassimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah on the necessity to enhance the growing confidence in the capabilities and potential of entrepreneurs with disabilities in the United Arab Emirates. Participations are evaluated based on Personal Characteristics, Strategic Direction, Professionalism, Innovation and Business Results.

Sharjah Summer Promotions event is organized annually by Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry to support the retail sector within the Chamber’s strategy and vision to advance this important and vital sector through entertainment events and promotions, highlighting Sharjah’s tourist attractions and variety of activities in order to enhance the emirate’s repute as a tourist and economic hub in the region and beyond. Sharjah Summer Promotions provides for an abundance in activities and events that promote the emirate’s shopping and tourist sectors for the whole family.
